The Inheritance Games is the first of a three-part book series written by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. The novel focuses on Avery Kylie Grambs, a teenager from Connecticut, presumably during the early 2000’s. The story begins with Avery’s poor background, in which the author reveals that Avery lives with her older sister. Without their parents, the two are left to fend for themselves and struggle to make enough money to support each other. In addition to their financial situation, Avery’s sister appears to be in an abusive relationship. Often frustrated by her sister’s relationship, Avery tends to move in and out of the house. However, the only other available place for her to sleep in is her own car.
After having just recently moved into her car again, Avery receives news that she is set to inherit the famous Texan billionaire Tobias Hawthorne’s entire fortune after his death. The twist is that neither Avery nor the rest of the Hawthorne family knew of either person’s existence prior to the opening of Tobias’ will. At first, it appears as if Avery has no connection to Tobias. Both Avery and the Hawthorne family are eager to discover the billionaire’s reasons behind his shocking decision.
This sudden turn of events proves to be challenging for Avery. Early on, most of the family despises Avery. Many suspect she’s a conwoman who manipulated Tobias into giving away his entire fortune. Others are angry that she has seemingly stolen from their family. Once the public discovers that the famous Texan billionaire’s fortune has been handed to a complete stranger, they turn against Avery as well. However, as readers continue, they will find that Avery is not a weak character. She willingly moves forward, despite the trouble she encounters. Avery refuses to let fear and intimidation get in the way of what she wants. Throughout the story, Avery’s main goal is to uncover the secret connection between herself and Tobias Hawthorne, and to learn how to manage her newly inherited fortune. Not once does she consider backing down, despite what others repeatedly tell her. As time goes by, she becomes well adjusted to the inner workings of the Hawthorne family, and manages to win them over. It’s Avery’s constant perseverance that encourages readers to do the same in their everyday lives.
