The girls’ varsity basketball team started their AAA season strong, defeating the Balboa Buccaneers in a 57-18 blowout game on Jan. 9. Right from the tip-off, the girls were in control, playing good defense, swinging the ball, and waiting for the open shot.
The girls’ domination was evident in their lockout defense. The Cardinals kept the Bucs’ shooting to a minimum by stopping plays before they occurred and blocking balls before they got up.
The girls’ prowess on the court wasn’t limited to their stellar defense. Senior Cardinal Taylor Sui scored a team-high of 12 points with senior Katarina Lum tailing right behind with 8 points. “We were patient with our offense, looked for the good cuts, and found the open man,” senior player Hana Murphy said.
But seniors weren’t the only ones who got their time to shine. Junior Kelly Wong was one of the five starters, the other four being seniors Angie Ng, Taylor Sui, Lorna Tuufuli, and Katarina Lum.
The Cardinals’ next game will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 11 at Galileo against the Lions.
