JV girls’ basketball dismantles Wallenberg defense 33–13

JV girls’ basketball take down the Wallenberg Bulldogs 33–13 on Feb. 13.

The JV girls’ basketball team persevered, defeating the Wallenberg Bulldogs 33–13 on Feb. 13.

After opening tipoff, the Cardinals quickly forced the Bulldogs to commit a turnover. Sophomore co-captain and guard Tomi Eijima scored the first shot, leading the way for the Cardinals to continue on a 13–0 run. The Cardinals capitalized on the Bulldogs’ mistakes, and freshman guard Nicole Chan was able to make successful layups off of fast breaks. The quarter ended with the Cardinals up 15–2.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals did not allow the Bulldogs any opportunities to score the ball by tightening their defense. Along with the tighter defense, the Cardinals’ offense broke through the Bulldog’s defense, securing four baskets in the second quarter. With less than 30 seconds on the clock, freshman forward and center Mandera Silvestro scored the last basket of the quarter, ending the half with a score 23–2.

In the third quarter, the Cardinals lowered their defense and allowed the Bulldogs to move closer to the basket, allowing them to attempt higher percentage shots closer to the basket. “Wallenberg got more second chance shots because of their offensive rebounds,” Eijima said. “This exposed our lack of boxing out, so we had to make that adjustment during the course of the game.” As a result, the Cardinals scored a total of two points while the Bulldogs were able to score a total of six points, ending with the Cardinals up 25–8.

In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals slowly bounced back from the previous quarter. After the Bulldogs made a shot, freshman forward Winnie Qi contributed with two consecutive baskets. The game ended with the Cardinals up 33–13.

The Cardinals had an advantage in this game against the Bulldogs, outnumbering them fourteen players to six players. With more players, the Cardinals were able to rotate more often than their opponents and were overall less fatigued. Despite this, the Cardinals played with the same intensity as in other games, according to Eijima.

The Cardinals remain undefeated with this victory against the Bulldogs, adding another win to their current 8–0 regular season record. Since the Battle of the Birds, they have defeated the O’Connell Boilermakers 40–15, Galileo Lions 47–32, ICA Spartans 40–26, and the Mission Bears 2–0 (forfeit). Their next game will be against the Balboa Buccaneers today at 4 p.m. at home.
