The boys’ tennis team came out strong with a 6–1 win over the Washington Eagles on Wednesday, April 8, setting their record at 6–0 this season.

The Cardinals’ overall strong and strategic hitting played a key role in their second win over Washington this season. The team’s singles players swept through their opponents while all but one of the doubles matches saw victory.

Freshman Jacob Goldstein led the team in the number one singles match, winning 6–4, 5–7, 6–2. Number two singles player sophomore Ethan Trinh defeated his opponent, 6–4, 7–5. Senior Hector Chu also achieved victory in his number three singles match with a 6–2 first set, followed by a 6–2 second set. Freshman Mitchell Wong finished off his match as he conquered his opponent 7–5, 6–1.

Number one doubles players, senior Eli Rudman and sophomore James Sutton, also excelled in their match, winning 6–4, 6–3. Senior Robert Wu and junior Chuck Wong played the number two doubles match, but fell short, losing 0–6, 7–5, 2–6. Number three doubles partners, sophomore Joshua Wu and freshman Daniel Stepanian, brought the sixth win with a triumphant 6–2, 6–1.

Although the team won, the match displayed their need to improve on court positioning and hitting first serves, according to assistant coach John Mohr.

“Everybody hustled and worked hard,” Mohr said. “They played well and kept their minds in it which is the main thing. I’m very proud of the team. I like to see them try their hardest and succeed. You give it all a good go and succeed, that’s fine with me.”

The team’s next match will be held at Wallenberg High School against Wallenberg on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m.
