There are good teachers and there are bad teachers, but that fact does not seem to affect the decision of who receives a pink slip. During this economic slump, jobs are insecure, and many teachers are being threatened with release or relocation. To the dismay of many students in the San Francisco Unified School District, some of their favorite teachers have received pink slips, while other less effective teachers are allowed to stay because of tenure and seniority.

If our nation were to get a grade on our election turnouts, it would be a big red F. We're reminded by the scolding pundits that we are supposed to be the greatest democracy in the world, yet so many of us, especially teens, don't bother to exercise one of our greatest rights: the right to vote. The youth vote is the most elusive quarry in United States politics, but also the most sought after. A simple way to gain the favor of youth voters is to change the election day.

Every day, dozens of backpack-laden Lowell students trudge up Eucalyptus Drive and wait, sometimes for as much as a half-hour, to catch the bus home. They fork over their Fast Passes or change only to watch, at almost every stop, more and more people jump on the bus through the back door without paying proper fare.
