Circus music blared as a ferocious lion, a gaudy clown, a mime, an intimidating bearded woman and a brawny woman appeared from behind the red velvet curtains. The starry stage backdrop lit up while a shadowed figure emerged from a trapdoor invisible to the audience. Top hat on and hoop in hand, the ringleader took center stage. The stage lights flashed on.

You’re sitting in a movie theater, clutching your popcorn and soda as a slimy, dripping claw reaches out of the screen. Your eyes widen behind your cardboard glasses. Trapped in your seat, nausea sweeps over you as the reptilian fin inches closer to your neck. Sound like a blast from the past? The movie? Creature from the Black Lagoon. The year? 1954.

Gluten-free By Emily Moody When I first started my restricted diet, it was nothing more than a conversation starter. "Hey!" I would strike up an exchange, "I'm on a gluten-free diet!" This inevitably led to the explanation of what gluten is (the protein present in wheat, barley and rye), and questions about what I could and could not eat (nothing containing those grains, which included some surprises, such as soy sauce).

Chock full of cultural foods, the Mission District is home to a smorgasbord of individual food owners. The Tamale Lady is a classic example, but about six months ago, the hype machine pushed out the Magic Curry Kart, the Muffin Man, the Sexy Soup Cart and Soul Cocina. Some of these cooks have taken refuge in the young gourmet food cart industry, probably due to the recent economic downturns and people falling under financial pressure for the extra dollar, but as the majority of the public has declared, food carts are in. Whether it’s a la carte or dessert, you can fill your heart’s desire by visiting these carts.
