Breaking down the results of San Francisco’s election

The 2018 midterm election results have been announced. As high school students, it is important to stay informed about the decisions that are made by San Francisco voters. Below is a summary of the propositions that passed in San Francisco.

San Francisco Propositions

Proposition A will allow the city and county of San Francisco to issue $425 million in bonds to fund construction to repair the Embarcadero Seawall, which spans from San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf to China Basin, to improve the port’s structure for natural disaster safety. Proponents of this measure included Mayor London Breed, District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin and Assessor-Recorder Carmen Chu. An opponent of this measure was the Libertarian Party of San Francisco. Prop. A passed with 82 percent voter support.

Proposition B will add additional guidelines to the city charter. These guidelines focus on ensuring that the collection, storage, sharing or use of consumer personal information by large businesses and third party contractors is transparent, accessible and consensual. Prop. B passed with 57 percent voter support.

Proposition C will tax local businesses that earn over $50 million in gross revenue to fund housing and homeless services. Proponents of this measure included Marc Benioff, CEO of Salesforce and the Affordable Housing Alliance. Opponents included Mayor London Breed and the Chinatown Merchants Association. Prop. C passed with 60 percent voter support.

Proposition D will tax local marijuana businesses who earn over $500,000 in gross revenue to fund general city and county purposes. Prop. D passed with 66 percent voter support.

Proposition E will allocate 1.5 percent of the existing 8 percent hotel tax to fund arts and cultural services. Each fiscal year, the city will designate a certain amount of money for arts and cultural purposes, including support for nonprofit organizations and community centers. The remaining funds will be distributed to the General Fund. Prop. E passed with 74 percent voter support.
