On Aug. 30, a single gunshot was fired at Balboa High School. As a result, Balboa was put under lockdown for two hours by police. James Denman Middle School, Leadership High School, and San Miguel Early Education Center were also put on lockdown.

According to the San Francisco Police four students were detained, and one student, a 14-year-old freshman, is being investigated for illegal possession of a firearm, among other felony charges. The other three students are being investigated as possible accessories after the fact.

One student retained non life-threatening injuries unrelated to the gunshot, according to the SFPD. The student was released to their parents after the lockdown was lifted.

After the lockdown was lifted, Balboa students were dismissed for the day. Class resumed as normal on Aug. 31.
