Vars boys’ baseball beats Eagles on way to semi-finals

The varsity baseball team trampled 6–2 over the Washington Eagles on April 27, advancing to the semi-finals on May 4.

Sophomore infielder Levi Humphrey started off the first inning walking to first base. Junior catcher Owen Mahoney took first on a single and junior infielder Alex Bradshaw followed with another single. With bases loaded, senior pitcher Joe Solomon’s single brought Humphrey home. Senior outfielder Motana Phouspraseut’s was hit by a pitch, bringing Bradshaw home. Next, Mahoney scored on senior outfielder Jacob Tang’s single. Senior outfielder Ej Whorton’s flyout ended the first inning with the Cardinals up 3–0.

Starting the second inning, senior infielder Adam Gardi and Humphrey’s fly outs and Mahoney and Solomon’s strikeouts quickly ended the top of the inning without scoring any runs.

In the top half of the third inning, Phouspraseut landed on first base with an uncaught third strike and stole second during Tang’s at bat. The Cardinals’ inning ended with Tang and Whorton’s strikeouts.

Humphrey hit a double in the top of the fourth inning. Next, Mahoney landed on first from a hit by pitch. The following batters flied out and struck out, ending the top half of the inning 3–0.

Starting the fifth inning, Phouspraseut hit a single and stole second. Phouspraseut then scored on senior catcher Martell Coleman’s double. As Tang replaced Coleman as a runner, Tang stole third and scored on a wild pitch. Humphrey’s hit by pitch loaded all the bases, but the inning ended with Mahoney flied out.

During the sixth inning, the Cardinals were not able to score any runs, leaving a 5–0 lead.

Whorton started the seventh inning on first base from a single and Gardi followed with another single. Gardi attempted to steal second, but was tagged out. Whorton soon scored a run on Humphrey’s double. Mahoney singled. But the seventh inning ended without the Cardinals scoring. The Eagles then scored two runs, ending the game 6–2.

The Cardinals will compete in the semi-finals this Thursday 3:30 p.m. at Big Rec Graham Field.
