![From Friday, April 5 to Monday, April 8, members of the Lowell Chamber Choir traveled to Boston, Massachusetts, to compete in World Stride’s annual choir competition. Competing on Saturday, April 6, both Lowell’s Chamber Choir and Concert Choir teams placed first.
Prior to competition day, the choir team held practices nearly every single day, according to music teacher Jason Chan. Senior Diadora Wong, a member of the chamber choir, recalls the difficulty of gathering every student to practice every day. “For Chamber Choir, we would practice every day after school for one to two hours just to make sure that our set was really well done when we performed,” Wong said. “We really struggled with getting everybody together during practice because everybody is so busy, and we have extracurriculars outside of Chamber Choir that we’re committed to.”
Despite the initial challenge, none of their efforts went to waste. After performing, Wong believed the team was satisfied with their performance. “I think we were all confident that we would do a good job and land some sort of role or title,” Wong said. She describes the teams’ anticipation and excitement leading up to the award ceremony as intense. “I think the suspension leading up to the announcement of who won was really thrilling,” Wong said. “But it’s exciting to hear your name get called up.”
After spending four days with one another, this trip brought the choir community together — at Lowell and with other choir groups as well. “On the day of the competition, we connected in this way where we have acknowledged that we’ve spent so much time together and so much time practicing [that] there’s no going back now,” Wong said. In addition, Wong mentioned that the event included a dance and a large dinner intended for students across different schools to meet one another. Wong, who dreamt of joining Chamber Choir since the eighth grade, is grateful for this experience. “It’s such a privilege,” Wong said. “I would definitely go again.”
